The mommy diaries: Confessions of a gentle mama

Being a mama is hard sometimes. It seems especially hard when the dada is working what seems like ALL. THE. TIME. With dada gone mama feels like a single parent and starts to wear thin. But, I must remember my mantra! I am a gentle mama...I won't ever hit Aiden and I don't really like traditional timeouts (but have used them a few times). I won't let him cry it out EVER. PERIOD. Discipline and child rearing in our house are about setting up our kids for success and helping them through situations with instructions and grace. That said....while I give lots of grace to Aiden, I do loose my patience sometimes. That sometimes, lately, has seemed like every night around bedtime.

With Tom gone Aiden I chum around all day together. I love it. He's growing into my little companion. We play with toys and read books and today as I was cleaning the bathroom my sweet little Aiden picked up a rag and was wiping the wall. It was so sweet. But, Aiden is a spirited child and still needs lots of redirection....like telling him for 4 times in 5 minutes not to use his hammer on the glass cupboard door.

So, by the end of the day, I'm tired and my mama patience is running thin. Aiden is very high needs at night and I admit that more than once I've gotten frustrated and used a not nice mommy voice and acted very put off and angry. I'm ashamed, really. I'm 27 and I know better than that.

So, really, this post is a confession. I really need to do better at night. Even though sometimes getting that kid to sleep is like wrestling an octupus (for an hour!), I need to take a breath, remember that the fruit of the spirit is gentleness and self control, pray for strength, and do better. It seems like Aiden is so much older than he really is sometimes because he was such an early walker and talker, but he is really still a baby. He needs lots of help at night and deserves a more gentle mama. Lord, help me to respond to Aiden how you would. Help me to give grace to him as consistently as you give grace to me. Please forgive me and continue to show me how to create an environment where Aiden's heart can grow tender to you.

Thank you for sharing in your struggle. As mother's we get tired and I think God understands and is okay with us when we get angry. I know He probably has been angry with me many times. I will lift up you both tonight! love ya.

This was so nice to read! I'm so glad I can continue to read your blog even though I'm deleting mine today! You are a great blogger :) I completely understand what you are going through. I need to be more Gentle with Eli and that is the kind of Mommy I want to be as well :) It's so nice to hear other Mom's that have my parenting style and to know that they struggle just the same! Thanks for sharing your confession!

Apple Creek

A new year, a new orchard. This year we tried out Apple Creek Orchard and it was a really pretty place. We picked apples, took a hay ride, and the boys had fun with the apple slinger. We were joined by Tom's parents and it feels so good to have them now living close by instead of far away.

Almost to the finish line.

It's hard to believe that Aiden turns 18 in one week and walks through graduation in just one month. After more than a decade of homeschooling, 2 years of PSEO, and no less than one million moments that I'll treasure forever, my oldest will be an adult and graduated. Great things are ahead for my boy!

Happy Birthday, Cade!

My littlest is seven and it's hard  not to be sad. We couldn't be without him, and we're so glad he's ours.  At seven years old Cade loves to do what everyone else is doing. He will NOT play by himself, and maybe it's because he's used to having someone to entertain him all the time. He loves legos and soccer. He also loves to read. I am ALWAYS finding Cade trying to tackle reading a book he probably isn't quite ready for. Lately he's been trying to read The Hobbit. While he's able to read all the words, he just doesn't have the depth of understanding to read it independently quite yet. He LOVES Tom Sawyer so he was delighted to find an abridged version to read.  Cade makes up his own mind about things. He will NOT be bossed around. He holds his own, so I don't worry about his brothers pushing him over. Cade also won't be pushed over physically. He is one tough kid. If Cade is crying, I know he is actually hurt because he never cries ove...
