Happy Birthday, Penny and Puppy!

This week it was brought to my attention that Penny and Puppy had a birthday coming up. We love any chance for a celebration and I had a frosting recipe I was dying to try. So we planned a party for the stuffed animals and set Friday as the big day. Aiden made the cupcakes. True confession: I hate baking with the boys. So, for this occasion I just bought a box mix (don't throw stones) and Aiden made them himself.  Earlier I had stumbled upon a S'more Buttercream Frosting recipe. Homemade buttercream frosting with marshmallows mixed in?????? Yes. Please. A few words about the frosting:  In short, it was marvelous. Buttercream with melted chocolate and melted marshmallows mixed in....you could really taste the marshmallows and the light but creamy texture was amazing. Obviously, the sugar load in this frosting was intense. We don't normally eat tons of sugar but I'm game for a treat now and again (or everyday:) ). However, my blood sugar wasn't normal for the entire rest of the day. I frosted only about seven cupcakes (one for each of us and one for Penny and Puppy and one extra...just in case). I was going to take the rest to the cabin but after eating too much frosting I threw it all away a long with the rest of cupcake batch. I had to throw it all away while I felt sick and had the will power to do it. If I hadn't I wouldn't be writing this because I'd be in a sugar coma. I don't regret eating them though....S'more Buttercream Frosting...would anyone really pass that up???

Anyway, back to the party. Aiden decorated the yard with streamers. We sat down, sang Happy Birthday, ate the cupcakes, and chatted for a bit with Penny and Puppy. According to Sage, Penny turned 1 and Aiden said that Puppy was 6. Aiden was accurate in calculating Puppy's age. I think Penny is more like 4 or 5, but Sage must calculate in some form of dog years. :) The boys then played with balloons and played with the "blowers." Now they are in bed and I'm on a sugar detox.

Apple Creek

A new year, a new orchard. This year we tried out Apple Creek Orchard and it was a really pretty place. We picked apples, took a hay ride, and the boys had fun with the apple slinger. We were joined by Tom's parents and it feels so good to have them now living close by instead of far away.

Almost to the finish line.

It's hard to believe that Aiden turns 18 in one week and walks through graduation in just one month. After more than a decade of homeschooling, 2 years of PSEO, and no less than one million moments that I'll treasure forever, my oldest will be an adult and graduated. Great things are ahead for my boy!

Happy Birthday, Cade!

My littlest is seven and it's hard  not to be sad. We couldn't be without him, and we're so glad he's ours.  At seven years old Cade loves to do what everyone else is doing. He will NOT play by himself, and maybe it's because he's used to having someone to entertain him all the time. He loves legos and soccer. He also loves to read. I am ALWAYS finding Cade trying to tackle reading a book he probably isn't quite ready for. Lately he's been trying to read The Hobbit. While he's able to read all the words, he just doesn't have the depth of understanding to read it independently quite yet. He LOVES Tom Sawyer so he was delighted to find an abridged version to read.  Cade makes up his own mind about things. He will NOT be bossed around. He holds his own, so I don't worry about his brothers pushing him over. Cade also won't be pushed over physically. He is one tough kid. If Cade is crying, I know he is actually hurt because he never cries ove...
